Retina Foundation Researchers Presenting at AAPOS

Thankfully, the saying, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” will not apply to this year’s annual meeting of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus (AAPOS). Rather, doctors and other vision and eye care professionals will be drawn to the “Big Apple” this spring for the organization’s 48th conference. The mission of AAPOS is to identify and promote the highest quality medical and surgical eye care worldwide for all children, and for adults with eye misalignment.

The Crystal Charity Ball Pediatric Vision Laboratory at the Retina Foundation will be well represented as Director, Eileen Birch, PhD presents the research topic, “Objective Assessment of Control Compared with Clinical Triple Office Control Score in Children with Intermittent Exotropia.” The research was funded by the Thrasher Research Fund.

Retina researcher, Reed Jost, MS, will be speaking on the “Randomized Clinical Trial of Binocular Contrast-Rebalanced Dichoptic Cartoons versus Patching for Treatment of Amblyopia in Children Aged 3 to 5 Years.” This project was funded by the NIH National Eye Institute and the Canadian Institutes for Health Research.

In addition to presenting recent research conducted at the Retina Foundation, Dr. Birch and Mr. Jost will strengthen their collaborations with pediatric ophthalmologists and other researchers while gleaning renewed inspiration for the future of pediatric vision research and treatments.

Julia Sands Cunningham, trustee at The Rosewood Foundation, stated, “We are pleased to continue our support of the Retina Foundation. As many of you know, my grandmother, Caroline Rose Hunt, suffered from agerelated macular degeneration and we saw daily how it affected her personal freedom and life. The Rosewood Foundation and the Retina Foundation have similar goals – to make meaningful contributions to improve the quality of life for future generations. We are proud to continue our support of the Retina Foundation as they lead the charge in innovative research and therapy for AMD and other eye diseases.”
