The mission of the Retina Foundation of the Southwest is to prevent vision loss and restore sight through innovative research and treatment for pediatric eye conditions, inherited eye diseases, and age-related macular degeneration.

Researchers from the Retina Foundation will be at the upcoming Association of Research in Vison and Ophthalmology (ARVO) in New Orleans. ARVO is the premier collaborative event for eye and vision research. Approximately 10,000 of the brightest minds in vision research from 75 countries will be in attendance. In 13 scientific sections ranging from Anatomy to Visual Psychophysics, ARVO fosters interaction and collaborations among clinical and basic science researchers and strongly supports the next generation of eye and vision researchers; values also held by the Retina Foundation.

• Each Retina Foundation laboratory will present novel, cutting edge research. Topics include:
• Merits of a screening test for detecting Retinitis Pigmentosa visual field loss
• Initial measurements of light sensitivity and retinal thickness in a study detailing retina degeneration over time
• Impact of Amblyopia (lazy eye) on children’s eye movements, reading, ability to balance
• Prolonged exposure to oxidized (bad/LDL) cholesterol changes how retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells use energy
• Children with differing amounts of farsightedness in each eye experience unique changes in eye growth
• Using deep learning (AI) to measure disease progression in X-Linked Retinitis Pigmentosa (xlRP)

Visionary Luncheon Launch Party Hosted by Mrs. Margot Perot

The Retina Foundation announced its Visionary Luncheon Chairs, Steve and Barbara Durham, Honorary Chair Douglas Hawthorne, as well as its $1 million fundraising goal during a Visionary Luncheon Launch Party hosted by Margot Perot at Perot Companies. The luncheon will be held at the Hilton Anatole on May 18th.

The launch party kicked off with a video of Jeanne Klein sharing her Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) diagnosis and how the Retina Foundation has given her hope for the future. Lou Grabowski, board chair, shared that the Foundation is on a journey to stop vision loss through its research based patient-centered, expedited approach. The 2023 luncheon theme is, “The places you’ll see! Vision is our destination.”

Long-time Dallas philanthropists, Steve and Barbara Durham, have focused their work on entrepreneurship, health, and the arts for decades. Their support of the Retina Foundation includes the expansion of the medical director team and continued pursuit of innovative research that improves the quality of life for patients around the world. “We’re sincerely grateful for Steve and Barbara Durham’s commitment to not only the mission of the Foundation, but their willingness to engage other philanthropists in a meaningful way,” said Karl Csaky, MD, PhD, Chief Executive and Medical Officer of the Retina Foundation of the Southwest.

As a leader greatly responsible for elevating Dallas globally across industries, the featured guest speaker at the Visionary Luncheon, Thomas C. Leppert, will share how transformational innovations have been and will always be achieved through collaborative, risk-taking ventures and why Dallas is on the cusp of a new era in biomedical advancements.

During the Visionary Luncheon, the Hunt Family Visionary Award will be presented to a deserving recipient for unwavering support in the Foundation’s mission to prevent vision loss and restore sight through innovative research, education, and treatment.
