How did you learn about the
Retina Foundation?
/* Template Name: AMD Sibling Study Match Campaign */
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss among people age 50 and older. This debilitating condition affects the macula, the part of the eye needed for sharp, central vision. As AMD progresses, sufferers lose the ability to read, drive a car and recognize the faces of the loved ones. As our population ages, the prevalence of AMD is expected to double by 2050, posing a growing public health challenge.
Jeanne and Diane witnessed their mother lose her vision due to AMD. Jeanne has been diagnosed with AMD, but Diane has not. Given that both sisters have the genetic marker that leads to AMD, why does only one sister have the disease? To answer that question, Jeanne and Diane are participating in a first-of-its-kind study at the Retina Foundation. With a simple blood draw, Retina Foundation scientists can create stem cells and then retinal cells, creating mini eyeballs for each sister. The mini eyeballs allow researchers to test medicine and conduct genetic research on replicas of the sisters’ eyes – all in a lab. Through this study, the Retina Foundation will unlock new insights that could lead to early detection, improved treatments, and ultimately, a cure for AMD. Jeanne, reflecting on the support she has received from The Retina Foundation, said: “They made me stop crying and have hope.”
After hearing Jeanne and Diane share their story at the annual Visionary Luncheon, the Buena Vista Foundation and the Tapestry Foundation were moved to support the sibling study with a matching gift of $250,000. This means that for a limited time, every dollar you donate will be DOUBLED, amplifying the impact of your generosity.
A medical destination for innovative research on retinal diseases, The Retina Foundation is at the forefront of stem cell research. Your generous support makes an immediate and long-lasting impact as we work to find treatments and cure for Jeanne and the 18 million people living with AMD. By contributing to the AMD Challenge Match, you are investing in a future where no one has to suffer the devastating effects of AMD. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to DOUBLE your impact and help us make a difference.
and be a part of the vision to see a world without AMD.
Together, we can turn hope into reality.
