About the Clinical Center of Innovation for AMD

The Clinical Center of Innovation for AMD provides specialized vision evaluations including a first of its kind quick contrast sensitivity test. This machine will display letters of varying levels of blurriness, customizing the test to the patient’s response. Research shows this is one of the most precise methods of measuring vision in patients with AMD.

The Center is one of a dozen sites in the country to have the latest and most advanced OCT Angiography model currently available. This test is a non-invasive approach to further analyzing the structure of the eye involved with AMD.

MEET

Karl G. Csaky, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Csaky is the Chief Executive and Medical Officer of the Retina Foundation. He is a board-certified ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal specialist. He leads a team of dedicated scientists and clinical researchers that are furthering our understanding of the diagnosis and treatments of AMD.

Dr. Csaky received his combined medical and doctorate degrees from the University of Louisville. Following residency in Internal Medicine at Duke University, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Washington University and a retina fellowship at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins. He then completed a three-year postdoctoral fellowship at the National Cancer Institute. Prior to joining the Retina Foundation in 2009, Dr. Csaky was a tenured associate professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Duke University and a tenured senior investigator at the National Eye Institute where he ran the Laboratory of Retinal Diseases and Therapeutics.

He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Retina Society, Macula Society, Texas Medical Association, Texas Ophthalmological Association, and American Society of Retina Specialists.
