Why We Give

Henderson Ocular Stem Cell Laboratory

Stem cell research and clinical trials are at the forefront of unlocking new potential treatments and therapies to save vision. From AMD to IRDs to pediatric eye conditions, stem cell research is helping us get closer to finding a cure for vision loss. Your gift to the Retina Foundation helps support the groundbreaking research that will get us there.

“We wanted our support of the Retina Foundation to make the biggest possible impact, and Dr. Csaky directed us to stem cell research. It’s something that will touch retina patients across the board, across diseases. That’s why we decided to dedicate our gift to the ocular stem cell lab and Dr. Sripathi.”

Jill and Grant Henderson’s gift to the Retina Foundation established the Henderson Ocular Stem Cell Laboratory, led by Dr. Sri Sripathi.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration Research

As the leading cause of vision loss for those over age 50, AMD impacts approximately 18 million people in the United States alone. With stem cell research, gene therapy and gene editing ushering in new possibilities to save vision, investing in AMD research has never been more critical. Your gift to the Retina Foundation helps us get closer to finding a cure for AMD and provides hope for the millions of people impacted by the disease.

“Jeanne and I have been dear friends for years, and I have seen first-hand how AMD has impacted her life. Jeanne’s tenacity and courage and the amazing innovation taking place at the Retina Foundation moved me to make this gift in collaboration with Tapestry Foundation. We hope others are inspired to join us and support the important work of the Retina Foundation to save vision.”

Betsy Abell with Buena Vista Foundation gave in honor of her friend, Jeanne Klein, who is part of the groundbreaking AMD sibling study at the Retina Foundation. The goal of the study is to determine why Jeanne has developed AMD and her sister, Diane, has not even though they both have the same genetic factor for the disease.

Ophthalmic Genetics Laboratory

Inherited retinal diseases affect people of all ages, from birth to adulthood, causing life-altering vision loss. Your gift to the Retina Foundation enables us to provide hope for patients with IRDs – hope for new treatments that will improve their vision and quality of life.

“When we reflected on our philanthropic goals, we realized how meaningful it would be to support a cause that could truly change lives and knew Dr. Pennesi was someone who could make a difference, not just for our family but for countless others who experience vision loss. The Retina Foundation, as a global medical destination, is leading advancements in technology that offer real hope back by science, and we’re honored to be part of the team that brought Dr. Pennesi to Dallas.”

Debbie and Steve Gray’s gift helped the Retina Foundation recruit Dr. Mark Pennesi, bringing his cutting-edge IRD research and clinical trials to Dallas.

Donor Thank Yous

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all of our donors who have generously given to the Retina Foundation to advance innovative research for new treatments and cures to save vision.
