By focusing on AMD, IRD and pediatric vision disorders, the Foundation develops groundbreaking therapies that improve lives. Through advanced imaging, genetic testing and clinical trials, researchers uncover new ways to diagnose and treat eye diseases before they lead to irreversible blindness.
With a team of world-renowned scientists and physicians, the Retina Foundation transforms cutting-edge discoveries into real-world treatments. From gene therapy and stem cell research to novel drug developments, the Foundation is at the forefront of personalized medicine for vision disorders. These breakthroughs not only provide hope backed by science for patients but also set new standards for ophthalmic care worldwide.
Through collaboration with global research institutions, biotech companies and patient advocacy groups, the Retina Foundation accelerates progress in the fight against vision loss. By bringing together expertise and innovation, the Foundation ensures that more people have access to life-changing treatments.
A successful business owner, caring doctor and risk-taking visionary, Dr. William L. Hutton joined Dr. Albert Vaiser, Dr. William Snyder and Joe Turner, Jr. to establish the Retina Foundation. Demanding better answers for his patients, Dr. Hutton recognized the need for a leading research institution to uncover solutions to vision loss. Fifty years later, the Retina Foundation yields hope backed by science for those with retinal degeneration. A successful leader in both business and healthcare, he helped introduce advanced treatments for retinal disease to North Texas and played a key role in establishing Dallas as a medical destination for ocular healthcare. His career spans clinical innovation, academic contribution and healthcare leadership, leaving a lasting impact on the field of ophthalmology.
Dr. Hutton’s goal was always clear: give patients access to the most advanced care possible — approaches years ahead of their time. The Retina Foundation became the place where groundbreaking research and clinical care could work hand in hand to make that vision real. Learn more about the remarkable legacy of Dr. William L. Hutton and the enduring impact of the Retina Foundation.
What is one person’s impact? The Retina Foundation recently celebrated a true pioneer, mentor and advocate for every patient who dreams of a future with clear vision – David Birch, PhD. Dr. Birch’s remarkable career stands as a testament to what science can achieve when guided by empathy, integrity and purpose. Dr. Birch was recruited to the Retina Foundation in 1982 to establish a research center dedicated to treating inherited retinal diseases (IRDs). Developing and serving as the director of the Rose-Silverthorne Retinal Degenerations Laboratory, Dr. Birch devoted his life’s work to understanding and treating IRDs, bringing hope to countless patients and families in North Texas and around the world, as well as transforming the Retina Foundation into a global center of excellence for retinal research.
After decades of advancing ocular research, Dr. Birch will continue to impact the field through his emeritus status and continued involvement with clinical trials at the Retina Foundation.
