Lucas’ Story

Lucas’ parents first noticed something was off when they saw him “rubbing” shadows or objects with his foot before taking a step. This was exacerbated when his mother received phone calls from teachers claiming that his foot “rubbing” was destructive and that his behavior and sloppy handwriting warranted an ADHD assessment. When it started getting dark outside, Lucas refused to play because he claimed he couldn’t see. Even after occupational therapy, his mother said it didn’t help him much.

Lucas was referred to the Retina Foundation by his pediatric ophthalmologist where his amblyopia (lazy-eye) and strabismus (crossed-eyes) resulting in reduced depth perception were confirmed. The researchers provided reports to his school and occupational therapist which were helpful for customizing accommodations and therapies.

The Retina Foundation provided his parents with a written report of his vision assessments and standardized test of eye-hand coordination and balance.  His parents have enrolled him in therapy for vision (eye-hand coordination and balance), speech, and motor delays. He is scheduled follow-ups at the Retina Foundation for vision, manual dexterity, and balance to assess his progress.
