Thomas’ Story

Mr. Thomas Adler is one of Dr. Karl Csaky’s many AMD patients. When Mr. Adler was first diagnosed, he was told there was nothing that could be done for him. He spent months searching for answers untli he found the Retina Foundation and Dr. Karl Csaky. Mr. Adler is just one of 18 million people who struggle with AMD. It is the leading cause of vision loss for those over 50. His AMD has led to legal blindness in his left eye. Along with his vision, AMD has stolen much of Mr. Adler’s independence. He lives alone but continued loss of vision may jeopardize his home situation.  Currently, there are no cures or treatments for wet AMD. However, there are clinical trials and innovations in progress. The Retina Foundation is the leader in these advancements. With the help of relatives, Mr. Adler visits Dr. Csaky at the Retina Foundation every 3-4 months. Dr. Csaky can monitor his disease progression and attempt to slow down the disease by enrolling him in ongoing clinical trials. Like all Retina Foundation patients, Mr. Adler is never charged for his visits.

Through the Retina Foundation’s work, the organization hopes to offer Mr. Adler and other patients state-of-the art care and, most importantly, a personalized approach to allow for self-sufficiency. The laboratory researchers at the Retina Foundation have recently developed their cell-based model of AMD to open doors to more solutions. Each advancement is one step closer to treatments that save and restore vision.
